2015 Building and Remodeling Trends

As we head into peak building and remodeling season, there are new construction and remodeling trends to consider as you are looking for a new home, buying a home with an eye for a remodel, or even considering a remodel on your current home. The top trends, according to the National Association of Homebuilders, Consumer Reports, and Better Homes and Gardens are:

  • Aging in Place – As multiple generations live under one roof and as seniors demand a more-independent lifestyle, contractors are widening doorways and hallways for wheelchair access and making bathrooms and kitchens more accessible for different abilities.
  • Customize your Kitchen –Did you know there are island work stations whose height can be adjusted and countertops that serve as a charging station with no plug-ins needed? Did you know you can order a fridge now with a customized interior storage plan? This technology is here today!
  • Touchless – From faucets that turn on when you slide your hand underneath to dishwashers that open with a knock, manufacturers are moving away from traditional handles and pulls in favor of touch technology. Cabinet drawers and doors can be opened by a quick touch or push are available. Kohler has also introduced a touchless flush toilet that works by waving one’s hand over the tank. These advances are not only handy for all age groups, they also are healthier as there are fewer surfaces that can exchange germs.
  • Master Spa Suites – The master bathroom is no longer simply a bathroom. Master bathroom spa experiences are in-demand. From steam showers with multiple heads, luxurious stand-alone soaking tubs, dramatic lighting, heated towel racks, and stunning finishes, today’s homeowner expects to unwind in style.
  • Connectivity – Smart phones can now control our home lighting, security systems, heating and cooling, and can even unlock a door from afar.
  • Metal – Metal countertops, backsplashes, ceiling coverings, lighting, cast sinks, and even brushed metal-looking wallpaper are popular trends.
  • Windows, windows, windows – Just a few decades ago, windows were notoriously terrible at keeping the heat in in the winter and out in the summer. But technological advances in energy efficiency have allowed windows to get larger without sacrificing the energy budget. Walls of windows which allow the natural light in are in-demand.
  • Expanding the living space by heading outside – There has been a huge growth in outdoor living popularity over the last decade and creating an outdoor room seems to be at the top of everyone’s “must have” list. Homeowners want outdoor fireplaces, cooking areas and places to relax and entertain with beautiful landscaping and hardscaping.
